Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Monday, March 20, 2006

Buffalo, New York —On Saturday March 18, citizens in Buffalo demonstrated to make their voices be heard. The protest mounted by people opposed to the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal took place on the proposed site at Forest and Elmwood Avenues.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a 72-room, seven-million-dollar hotel proposed by Savarino Construction Services Corporation. The hotel would require the demolition of at least five buildings (1109-1121 Elmwood), which house several shops and residents. Karl Frizlen, an architect with Frizlen Group, designed the hotel. Although the properties are “under contract,” it is still unknown if Savarino Construction actually owns the buildings. It is believed that Hans Mobius, a resident of Clarence, New York and former Buffalo Mayorial candidate, is still the owner. The hotel is expected to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Despite the cold weather, at least 40 people showed up to walk the picket line for 2 two hours.

Clarence Carnahan, a Buffalo resident, supplied signs that citizens could use during the protest. Some of the signs said, ‘No vacancy, No hotel,’ ‘No tell hotel,’ ‘Hans off’ and ‘Our neighborhood, our choice, no hotel.’

“The concern is they are going to tear down established businesses that have been here for years,” said Charles Leist, a protester.

“We’re fighting to the bitter end. We’re hoping that we can squelch this. We don’t think we can, but we’re going down kicking and screaming,” said Patty Morris, co-owner with Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel at 1119 Elmwood. Don Apparel is a vintage clothing and collectible shop and has been at the same location for nearly 14 years.

The city’s Common Council is expected to vote on the proposal on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at 2:00 PM in Council Chambers, on 13th floor in City Hall.

The Planning Board is expected to vote on the proposal on Tuesday, March 28, at 8:00 AM in room 902 on the 9th floor of City Hall.

Even if the Common Council approves the proposal, the Planning board will get the final say in the matter.

So far, no other protests are scheduled. Organizers say they will wait until the Common Council votes before organizing any more protests.

Sheffield tram-train project back on the rails

Monday, March 28, 2011

An ambitious project to bring a unique tram-train service to Sheffield and Rotherham, in the United Kingdom, is back on track, following the announcement of a £150,000 Government grant on Thursday. The plans, which were originally to see tram-train operation on a trial basis over the Penistone line during 2010, have been on the cards since 2008, but were shelved during 2009 to allow alternative proposals to be drawn up. The current plans will now see the vehicles operating along a currently-freight-only line between Rotherham and Meadowhall, before linking up with the existing South Yorkshire Supertram network there and continuing onto the streets of Sheffield.

The plans to use tram-trains — which are already in widespread use throughout continental Europe, but not at all within the UK — have come about as an alternative to an original proposal to extend the Supertram network to Rotherham, which would be a much larger expense for the same or even fewer benefits.

Whilst the journey between Sheffield and Rotherham is already covered by mainline trains, project officials believe that the new service – running via Meadowhall South and Rotherham Central and terminating at Parkgate, with a twenty-minute headway throughout – will attract extra custom to the intermediate points between the two conurbations, as well as making travel easier for people who find it hard to walk to and from Sheffield’s railway station; the tram-trains will serve the heart of the city-centre.

Now that the funding for further feasibility work has been approved, Network Rail, Northern Rail and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) can continue to look at the business and project case for the trial, which will look at a range of issues, including economic and environmental benefits of the tram-trains, and ensuring that the vehicles will be safe to run on both the Supertram network and heavy rail tracks.

Transport Minister Norman Baker announced the sum, and stressed the Government’s commitment to the scheme: “There is no doubt about finance being available to deliver the scheme. The Government is committed to a trial of tram-trains in the UK and the route between Sheffield and Rotherham is the best place to develop it. This is a unique scheme.

“Tram-trains offer passengers travelling from rural and suburban areas into city centres a viable, environmentally sound alternative to short and medium car commuting that can cut congestion and reduce overcrowding at railway stations.

“These sorts of rail fleets are already in use on the continent, but this is a first for the UK. The funding we are providing for this exciting project represents a real chance for us to test whether they can be adapted successfully for South Yorkshire and the rest of the UK.”

David Brown, director of SYPTE, added: “We have done an awful lot of work on the plans so far and further efforts will look at ensuring the vehicles are compatible with both types of network, which are the same gauge.”

If further investigations are successful, the system could be up and running by 2014.

What Your Realtor Isn’t Telling You About Preparing To Sell

By Juhlin Youlein

Selling a home can often be considered one of the most frustrating or irritating experiences an individual will experience in their lifetime. Most sellers that are selling a home they have lived in for any extended period of time start to grow attached to their home. When they sell their home, the seller wants to make sure and get the best possible deal, or get the maximum amount for the home they created so many memories in and are now separating from. A seller just envisions putting their home up for sale on the market, having little hassle, having a buyer come, love the home, accept the given price and to smoothly and peacefully make the transition between buyer and seller.

Unfortunately, selling a home rarely works out in such a fashion. In the last ten years or so, selling a home has become more and more complex process or transaction. Popping up left and right are hard to read, hard to understand, complicated forms dealing with everything from the environment, to law, to just terms of selling and buying.

On top of documents becoming more and more complicated, more and more realtors are changing from representing the seller first to representing the buyer first. It used to be that if a buyer slipped and told the realtor something as pertaining to the amount they were willing to pay for the home, the realtor would undoubtedly tell the seller even if the buyer asked them not to. In days past, a realtor did everything they could to get the highest price for their clients the sellers. Now, brokerage houses and other home related realtor businesses are trying to get the lowest possible price for their client the buyer.

The key to preparing for the new and complicated world of selling a home is to get a realtor. Realtors are trained and experienced with transactions such as housing marketing, accounting, financing, and all other areas of the transaction.

Before a seller hires a realtor though, the selling process takes months in advance to really prepare for. A seller should upgrade and prepare the home as much as possible. A seller should walk through their home and observe the different rooms looking for new paint jobs it will need or updates in the decorating. The seller should think to themselves about what the buyers will be seeing and improve the home accordingly.

Knowing when to sell actually takes a lot of extra preparation. Never sale a home at an inconvenient time for the seller; too much can go wrong and moving is a super stressful physical even in and of itself. Dates and time lines should be prearranged and set by the seller to keep a solid schedule. Also the time of year is important; most homes are sold in the summer but that is ok because most buyers are active in the summer as well. Even though there is more competition, there is also a better market.

When planning on the price to sell a home, realize that a buyer will look for a home in the nicest neighborhood they think they can afford, and try and find the cheapest or least expensive home they can find in that particular neighborhood. So a seller should improve their home but not to the point that they are the most expensive in the neighborhood.

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

Staying Away From Asbestos: Dos And Don’ts Inside The House

By Marcus Stromms

The dangers of asbestos have been uncovered by many cases of both unrecorded and recorded heath problems and deaths. There are also many settlement cases documenting the harsh effects of asbestos to human health. Your home might be contaminated with this mineral. What should you do?

Staying Away from Asbestos: Dos and Don’ts Inside the House

Without your knowledge, your house might be contaminated with asbestos – a mineral that is known to cause different kinds of respiratory diseases like mesothelioma, pleural thickening, and asbestosis. If you are unsure of the level of asbestos contamination in your house, the following dos and don’ts will help you stay away from the dangers.

1. Keep minimal movements and other activities in damaged areas where asbestos might be present. This will keep contamination at a minimum level too.

2. Gently perform actions in areas where asbestos is present. This will help avoid damages to asbestos-containing materials preventing the release of thin strands and powder into the air.

3. Ask the help of builders with asbestos removal services when it comes to major repairs of asbestos-containing materials. They are skilled and well-trained to do the job in a safe manner.

4. Spare yourself from activities like dusting, sweeping, and vacuuming of debris and other waste particles that may contain asbestos.

5. Surfaces with asbestos such as floors and walls need to be spared from sanding, scrubbing, and drilling activities. These activities will scrape covering and cause asbestos fibres to be released into the air.

6. Avoid the use of power strippers on asbestos-ladden surfaces such as vinyl asbestos. Cleansers such as these are very strong and have the tendency to uncover the asbestos strands.

7. Evade sanding asbestos surfaces to make it on level. This process will contribute to the powdering of asbestos, making it more dangerous to your family’s health.

8. Steer clear of minor repairs when you deem you will not be able to handle asbestos-containing materials properly. Let professional builders and asbestos removers handle the task for you.

9. Never try to fix asbestos-containing roof shingles yourself. This process requires high levels of security that can be done by professional asbestos removers. They can also fix gutters properly, avoiding damages on asbestos-containing ceilings and roofs.

10. Let alone licensed asbestos removers perform sampling methods on materials suspected of containing asbestos. Doing-it-yourself might disturb the material and immediately release powdered asbestos dust. Trying to be an asbestos remover can highly endanger your family’s health when in fact none could have existed when you let professionals do the job.

To conclude, there are things that must be done and must be avoided by homeowners in order to spare themselves and their families from the risks posed by the disturbance of asbestos-containing materials.

In Australia, particularly in Brisbane, there are many professional builders that offer asbestos removal as one of their primary services. In fact, these builders, such as QHI have dedicated teams that can do asbestos inspection, assessment, containment, removal, and disposal of asbestos in specific parts of the house. With them, you are assured that wherever asbestos might be in your house – in floors walls, ceilings, roofs, gutters, and plumbing systems – they can be safely handled and removed.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”
