Nokia takes over Symbian OS development

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

On Monday, Symbian Foundation discontinued Symbian OS, as a result of its lost popularity since Android came to market. The Finnish telecommunications company Nokia, being one of the few hardware manufacturers who use the system on some of the models, announced that it has taken over the operating system’s development.

Nokia had acquired Symbian Foundation in 2008. Now, the foundation refused to continue the project, because this smartphone operating system had lost its popularity when Android came to market.During the next several months, most Symbian Foundation employees, who were completely governing the project previously, will retire.By April 2011, only the licensing team will stay to oversee the project.

The executive director of the Symbian Foundation Tim Holbrow explained the change, saying that “There has since been a seismic change in the mobile market but also more generally in the economy, which has led to a change in focus for some of our funding board members. The result of this is that the current governance structure for the Symbian platform — the foundation — is no longer appropriate.”

Instead, Nokia takes over the development of the system. This is possible because the Symbian OS is currently open source and freely redistributable. In an interview with ZDNet, the head of Nokia smartphone business Jo Harlow said that the takeover was in significant part because Nokia hardware was the major one using the OS. The development environment would be switched to Qt framework for the system to support cross-platform applications use and development. It is unclear whether the licensing of the future releases of the system would remain open-source.

Doctor diagnoses Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s infertility

Monday, April 23, 2012

File:Frida Kahlo by Artist René Romero Schuler.jpg

According to a new diagnosis by a surgical pathologist, Frida Kahlo most likely suffered uterine damage during a streetcar accident as a teenager and this led to a rare condition known as Asherman’s syndrome, and that would explain the Mexican artist’s infertility.

Dr. Fernando Antelo, from the Harbor–UCLA Medical Center, said, “Her survival defied the grim prognostication by her physicians; however, complications from this physical trauma would emerge in her adulthood.” He presented his diagnosis yesterday at the annual meeting of the American Association of Anatomists in San Diego.

Asherman’s syndrome is normally caused by a trauma to the uterus that results in internal scar tissue. For example, it can occur after multiple procedures to clear the uterus after a miscarriage or abortion, which is known as a “D & C” procedure. Antelo said Kahlo tried to have children many times and her miscarriages, as well as three therapeutic abortions, could have further aggravated the scarring.

At present the condition could be diagnosed and treated after advancements in medical imaging and hysteroscopy, but in Kahlo’s time, Dr. Antelo said, the technology had not advanced far enough to diagnose and treat her. Asherman’s syndrome has been known since 1894 when it was first reported. Kahlo died at age 47 in 1954.

“She kept attempting to have children with a uterus that wasn’t in any condition to do that,” Antelo said.

Antelo, who has been working on connections between art and medicine, says that Kahlo brought her infertility to the canvas and this can be seen in her many paintings of reproductive organs or in her depiction of her own bleeding body in the 1932 painting Henry Ford Hospital. In that image, Kahlo is shown lying on a hospital bed with multiple umbilical cords extending from her body and each one holds an object or body part, except one holding a baby.

How To Be Successful With Regards To Home Improvement

How To Be Successful With Regards To Home Improvement

by

Violeta Dimitrova

Many people shy away from learning home improvement skills because they fear the topic is boring. However, there is little else as empowering as working with your own two hands. This topic is fascinating and useful. To prove this point, this article will outline a few simple tips to beef up your knowledge of home improvement.

Many companies now seal their new tools to keep them looking sleek for months on a display shelf. As a result, tools like hammers can be very slippery the first time you use them. To make a new hammer less slippery, sand the head before using it. Give any new tool better traction by rubbing the work surfaces with sandpaper or steel wool.

Home Renovation

Before making renovations on your home, you should make sure that you know your budget. Otherwise, you could end up with a home renovation project that you can not afford to complete. Making a budget is vital to making sure you can safely afford going through on a renovation project.

When selecting a contractor for a home renovation, be sure to find someone you trust. Perform interviews as if you were hiring a personal assistant. You will have to let this contractor into your home and work with them on a daily basis. It\’s better to select one you trust from the beginning than to face personality clashes later.

When planning a home renovation with your contractor, be honest about your budget. While many homeowners fear that they will get ripped off by a contractor if it is known how much money they have to spend, the reality is that being honest will get you better results. The contractor is free to budget for better work and higher-quality materials if they know your true cost ceiling.

Home Improvement

Redo that old claw foot bathtub! You can make the finish look like new with specially designed products from the home improvement store. Don\’t forget to pick up a modern brass fixture to replace the old. You can even buy a matching brass ring to suspend a shower curtain from the ceiling!

Making a pond on your property can be a home improvement project that will beautify the outside of your home. Not only can it make a great place to put a picnic table, but you can enjoy nature and even fish out of your pond, provided you make it big enough.

When deciding to do home renovations on a budget, allow for an extra 10% for cost overruns. It is inevitable that any home improvement project is going to have things happen that just cannot be accounted for in the beginning. So, include this extra 10% so you do not go out of your budget.

As you can see, home improvement can actually be very satisfying. Learning how to do small jobs at your house fosters your sense of independence and boosts your confidence as a property owner. The do-it-yourself movement is absolutely within your reach after careful research, and reading this article is a great first step.

WHO declares Ebola outbreak an international emergency

Monday, August 11, 2014

On Friday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated the West African Ebola outbreak is now an international health emergency.

The current ongoing outbreak of Ebola is the deadliest since the disease was first reported in humans 40 years ago, with nearly 1,000 people reported to have been killed by the disease in this outbreak. So far three countries, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria, have declared national emergencies in response to the outbreak, with cases also reported in Guinea. The latter country was reported to have closed its borders with Sierra Leone and Liberia, but an official announcement later clarified they were taking medical precautions on border crossings.

Director-General of WHO Dr Margaret Chan appealed for an international response to the outbreak, calling it “the largest, most severe and most complex outbreak in the nearly four-decade history of this disease”. Reports say the comparatively underdeveloped medical infrastructure in the affected countries has hampered efforts to contain the spread of the virus, with Liberia’s health system particularly under-equipped for the pressure. Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF) said the health system in Liberia was “falling apart”. Health experts and aid workers from Europe and America are already working to help bring the outbreak under control, but MSF and WHO are now calling for more help.

The announcement by WHO has international law implications, and it is expected possible cases will not be allowed to leave the countries affected until it is confirmed they are clear of the virus, with the possibility of travel being denied from any region not meeting the WHO’s guidelines. WHO have also warned all nations should prepare to bring their own nationals back to home territory for treatment if infected by the virus, with cases already returned for treatment to the US and Spain.

WHO vaccine chief Jean-Marie Okwo Bele told [[Agence France-Presse|AFP] ]he expected a possible vaccine against Ebola to start clinical trials next month, stating: “Since this is an emergency, we can put emergency procedures in place […] so that we can have a vaccine available by 2015”. WHO assistant director-general Marie-Paule Kieny admitted, however, to do so the bar set during the testing process would have to be lower, reflecting questions about the ethics of using comparatively untested drugs, and who they should be given to.

Meanwhile, restrictions put in place to limit the spread of the disease are reported to be causing problems among those affected in already impoverished areas. Liberia and Sierra Leone are both reported to have deployed soldiers to limit travel within these countries, with many residents reported to be worried about the effect on their trade and incomes. The Telegraph reported from interviews, there is also resistance to some measures in Liberia, where there is a strong stigma attached to the disease. This has led to many people refusing to report the deaths of family members and hand their bodies over for cremation. There have also been cases of violence towards those seeking to enforce government measures to limit the disease’s spread.

46 illegal Afghan immigrants suffocate in truck in Pakistan

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Correction — Nov 1, 2013 The article below claims each passenger paid 4000 to 8000 USD. Each paid 30,000 Rupees, equivilent at the time to about US$375.

The bodies of 46 Afghan illegal immigrants who suffocated to death in a container truck Saturday near Quetta, Pakistan, returned home Tuesday.

The Edhi Foundation placed the victim’s bodies into coffins to transport them back to Chaman. Funeral prayers were said before victims left Quetta hospital. “We are taking these dead bodies to Spin Boldak and later these will be flown to Kabul by helicopter. We are thankful to Pakistan government for every help,” said Afghan consul general Daud Mohsini.

Afghan officials received the bodies from The Edhi ambulances and Pakistan police escorts at the Pak-Afghan border Bab-e-Dosti (Friendship Gate). Security was high and traffic was backed up at the border crossing. The bodies were taken to Kandahar then to Kabul before they were laid to rest in their home towns.

Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan dispatched aircraft to Pakistan to bring home the 46 victims. Poor weather grounded the planes, and the bodies were driven back across the border.

Pakistan police found a locked truck packed with approximately 111 Afghan illegal immigrants around 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Quetta on Saturday. The driver had fled the scene where 62 people were initially pronounced dead. Police said that from the strong smell emanating from the truck, the victims may have died days before they were discovered.

45 other people were found unconscious and taken directly to the hospital. At hospital two more migrants died. “The death toll is 46,” said Ghulam Dastagir, a police official.

Wazir Khan Nasir, a senior police official said, “We have been able to talk to some of the people, who were trapped in the container. They were all Afghans in the container and the container was going to Iran, When the condition of people inside the container deteriorated, the driver fled, leaving the container.”

Survivors have reported that a human smuggling racket locked 64 Kabul residents and 37 Spin Boldak residents in the truck container Friday afternoon. The truck’s air conditioning unit stopped working causing the locked passengers to cry out for help which was unheeded by the truck’s driver, and they fell unconscious. However, the loud ruckus caused by the trapped people inside did alert police and local residents to their plight.

The trip had cost each illegal immigrant US$4,000 to 8,000 for the trip. Gul Zameen, a survivor said, “We are all poor and wanted to find jobs in Quetta and Iran.”

The survivors have been charged under the Foreigners Act and some have been detained. Karzai has ordered an investigation and “demanded people avoid dangerous illegal migration and not be deceived by smugglers.” “We’ll go to Pakistan and talk to the survivors to find out what had exactly happened. The culprits will be brought to justice,” said Moheeddin Baluch head of the investigating delegation.

Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is also investigating. Five suspects believed to be involved in running the human smuggling racket have been arrested.

Aviator Scarf Motorcycle Scarf: How To Match Them Up

By Ronald Rougeaux

The impact of Aviator scarf and motorcycle scarf to fashion as well as to women aesthetics is immense. These stunningly beautiful scarves are famous and beyond the elegance delivered by designer clothes, fine jewelries, a nice piece of aviator scarf holds the power of making a sensational fashion wear. Good quality aviator motorcycle scarves are a great investment as they can offer you protection, comfort, as well as a high sense of self-esteem. To provide quality products to wearer, designers are creating some amazingly stylish modern accessories that are becoming essential to compliment any clothing.

Aviator scarf: Fashion is cyclical. What was trendy yesterday could very well be trendy tomorrow. In fact, today we are experiencing fads from previous eras. Vintage fashion has become an appealing style for many men and women alike. The neckerchiefs of the Sixties, the headbands of the Seventies and the long skirts of the Twenties are all coming back in style.

The aviator scarf is no such exception. Many Hollywood celebrities and even high-profile politicians and athletes can be seen wearing them at different occasions. Whether you are a man or a woman, this scarf can create an image of sophistication and ruggedness at the same time for you.

The aviator scarf was popular among pilots in the late 20s and early 30s due to the protection it offered for its wearers. Its distinctive white color and tiny tassels remind us of an era of exploration and discovery.

You do not need to be a pilot to enjoy the beauty of an aviator scarf. In fact, there are many clothing ensembles you can cook up with aviator scarves, whether for a day out or for a night at the opera. Here are the ways you can match aviator scarves.

Evening Wear

There is a theory that aviator scarves came from opera scarves. During the 1920s and 1930s, flying was usually reserved for wealthy men who could afford to buy planes as a hobby, or those who underwent strenuous and expensive training. Because of this, those who flew planes were normally those who also went to expensive operas. You will notice the similarity between aviator scarves and the white scarves won by stars like Clark Gable and Tyrone Power at evening affairs.

Men today can wear aviator scarves with their suits for a debonair appearance. Light-colored aviator scarves go best with brown or taupe suits, but also work well with gray and blue suits.

Leather Wear

The leather jacket is the most popular accessory to aviator scarves. You can wear brown or black leather jackets to accentuate the cream or white color of aviator scarves. Match this with dark denim jeans. This look can be as effective for both men and women.

You can add a twist to this look by wearing trench coats instead of leather jackets.

Active Wear

Aviator scarves also go well with plaid shirts, plain tank tops and button-down shirts. Dark denim jeans always go well with this ensemble.

Wikinews interviews India’s first female Paralympic medalist Deepa Malik

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Wikinews on Sunday interviewed Deepa Malik, India’s first female Paralympic medalist, who won the silver medal in the Women’s Shot Put F53 event finals, at the 2016 Summer Paralympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Malik lost the gold medal to Bahrain’s Fatema Nedham, who had the best throw 4.76 metres, setting a new regional record in paralympic women’s shot put.

Arriving in Rio, Malik had initial trouble due to the airline losing her luggage; it didn’t all arrive until three days later: clothes, opening ceremony outfit and equipment including competition belts.

In early August there was a possibly that Malik might lose her spot on the Indian team going to Rio, with fellow female para athlete Karam Jyoti challenging Malik’s selection and the Sport’s Authority of Indian’s selection process at the High Court of Delhi. The high court ruled against the plaintiff.

Both of these events occurred against the wider backdrop of the Paralympic Committee of India being suspended by the International Paralympic Committee. The Sports Authority of India took final authority over the Paralympic Committee of India for sending a team to Rio, with agreement from the International Paralympic Committee; this arrangement allowed India to compete under their own flag at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

((Wikinews)) Congratulations on your result.

Deepa Malik: Thank you so much.

((WN)) Even though you are currently waiting in terms of the end result of the protest.

DM: Absolutely, but I’m happy with my performance, I’m happy that I could improve and I could prove myself, there were a lot of questions back home on my selection and on my hard work. My single-minded focus that I had put into this journey of being a Paralympian. Well, I am just so anxious about the results.

((WN)) So how much did the court case and KLM losing your luggage impact on your preparations and your result today?

DM: Yes, but I’m happy that my husband was my coach here, and, so, I had huge moral support in terms of keeping my mind and everything in peace. Most of the equipment was available in the gym, we had to alter the training a bit like the throw days couldn’t happen, so we instead exercised. No, I think that is what sports teaches you, you can’t live on excuses, I never lived on excuses.

((WN)) You work around things.

DM: Yes, that’s what we do, that’s what a sportsman is suppose to do, rise again, and then fall and rise, and run, and I did exactly that.

((WN)) What message should other Indian women take away from your participation and result in Rio?

DM: This is going to be the first female medal that India would have ever won in Paralympics and as it is I’m working aggressively towards transforming this entire concept of empowerment for the women, especially the women in disabilities in my country. So I’m really happy that this medal give my voice more value, more strength, and I’ll be able to impact even more, though on the ninth of September the Prime Minister’s jury has awarded me with the award of Women Transforming India, I’m so happy that within three days of getting that award, I have added another feather to it and proved that yes this journey of ability beyond disability. And not just disability, this is a universal message that if women put their minds to their dreams they can balance it; age, gender, disability, is all a state of mind. If you put your passion and hard work, you can get it, and in the Indian scenario were they say infrastructure is a challenge, women participation that are taboo, religiously and psychologically, disabilities taken as a curse, dependability[?] increases because of lack of infrastructure, well, time to get rid of the excuses. We have to start erasing the excuses and believe your own self and that’s the message I’m carrying with all the activities that I do whether it is car rallying, motorbiking or swimming across a river, every record or every unique activity that I’ve undertaken and just below paralysis has been aimed at changing the stereotypical image of a women and also a women in disability. ?

((WN)) Will you and your daughter both be trying to represent India at the 2020 Games in Tokyo?

DM: I’m very sure about myself, but my daughter, though, she’s a Paralympian, yes, which again was considered a huge taboo in my society that oh my god both the mother and the daughter both have a physical disability, what is going to happen to these two, but we did good and she is working as a youth council representative in the Commonwealth countries, for the Paralympics specially, and her work though her foundation called Wheeling Happiness has earned her the young leader award from the Queen of England, so I guess her focus is now shifting to more on community service and empowering others and not just herself. And she is leaving on first of October to Loughborough to do her PhD doctorate programme in disability sports psychology, I’m very sure Loughborough is going to give her a huge amount of sports [inaudible] but how much time she going to decide to devote to sports and studies is her decision entirely. That’s her dream, her journey.

((WN)) How helpful was the Sports Authority of India in preparing and supporting your Rio ambitions??

DM: I think 100 per cent, because the biggest challenge we have back home is a customised training, or the infrastructure for that matter, so we were given the ability and the funds to train the way we wanted to train, and the funds were huge which were given to us, out accommodation, food, diet, physical therapist, psychologist, trainer, gym, everything was paid for, and customised, you want it and they give it. So I guess this was easy financially this time, because every expenses was taken care of, my husband could also take a sabbatical from his job and join my journey, and having him twenty-four seven and coaching me because he himself is an athlete, and have the best diet and counselling. I think it’s worked wonders, so I give shout out and a huge applaud.

((WN)) How important was it for you to have a carer in Rio?

DM: Yes, again we really have to appreciate the sports authority of India and also Paralympic Committee of India, which is going to start to function post-Rio in India. They were very very quick, they were very very adamant in giving the wheelchair people escorts. And I need help twenty four seven, I’m just below paralysed so it was really huge, emotionally, mentally, psychically training-wise, every way I think the situation was perfect.

((WN)) Thank you for your time.

DM: Thank you.

How To Dress Business Casual At Work

By Dave Matthews

The world of work has gone through many changes over the years, with one of the biggest being the clothing that people can wear in the workplace.

Some offices, for example, offer ‘dress down’ days, where workers can abandon the stuffy shirt and tie and instead sport more casual attire that makes people more comfortable. The atmosphere in such a workplace will be more relaxed, less formal, and more often than not more creative. Many workplaces are embracing this idea and find that it is a big hit with the workforce, who enjoy having the option of dressing in the kind of clothing they feel more comfortable in.

Some places ask that their workforce dresses in something called ‘business casual’. This is not as formal as business formal, but still needs some attention to be given to it if it is to be managed well. Business casual could mean something different form one company to the next, so it is worth asking your human resources or personnel department what the phrase means. At a large company, it may mean a sports jacket with a tie, at another it may mean sweaters and jeans.

Check your diary first to make sure that you do not have to attend a formal meeting on the day of the business casual date. The worst thing that could happen is that you turn up to the meeting underdressed.

One thing you should always try and make sure you do is to select good looking, clean clothes when you are dressing down to business causal. This is an important point. The company will still expect you to look good and professional. It is very easy to think of business causal or dressing down as meaning slightly scruffy and relaxed. This is not the case generally. If you turn up in clothes that have not been ironed or, worse, are actually visibly dirty, you’ve just taken your career merit points down a notch or two.

When it comes to the trousers that you wear, you should really always check before you go down the jeans route. While some companies, especially the more creative kinds such as advertising and marketing, do allow for jeans, many still don’t, so it is important that you check before you take the leap. It is much safer to opt for chinos, cords and khakis. These look good on anyone, and it means that you won’t run the risk of insulting any company ethos.

One cardinal sin is to not wear a belt. Forgetting the idea of business casual for a minute, it is a very brave man who chooses to not wear a belt with his trousers. Belts look good, and give shape to the overall look of your outfit. They are highly important, and no matter how casual you get you do need to wear a smart belt that matches the colour of the shoes you have chosen to wear.

Put these ideas together and you should come out of the whole business casual experience with your dignity pretty much intact.
