US dollar no longer accepted at Taj Mahal and other Indian historical sites

Friday, January 4, 2008

Due to the declining value of the United States dollar, tourism officials in India have decided to no longer accept the American currency at the site of the Taj Mahal and 120 other Indian historical sites.

The monument has refused to take dollars since November, as such, any American tourist wishing to visit the white domed marble mausoleum of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal will pay over 500 Indian rupees (US$ 12.80 at the current exchange rate) to be allowed in and additionally receive a free bottle of water.

The decision came as a result as part of the continuing decline of the American dollar, falling 11 percent in 2007 and now valued around 39 rupees.

Tourism Minister Ambika Soni told CNN-IBN that it seemed more practical and will save tourists money because “the dollar was weaker against the rupee,” Soni added “Before the dollar lost its value, there was a demand to have (admission tickets) just in rupees.”

Why You Need A Professional Commercial Roofer In Seattle As Opposed To One Trained In The Residential Market

byAlma Abell

Why this is important to note about the commercial and residential market is because in this economy where the new building projects are more sluggish, there will be some contractors or companies that try to compete for any type of job within their skill set. Also, a residential roofer will be certified to use specific roofing materials and those also do not translate into the commercial field. Check with the Commercial Roofer Seattle that you are considering working with for their current certifications as well as recent references and job sites.

While some contractors that typically work in the commercial industry can sometimes carry over their trades and skills to a private market, rarely is it the other way around. For instance, if you are looking for a Commercial Roofer in Seattle you would not look to a roofer that mainly works on residential homes. The fact is, the composition, system and application process is different. If you are looking for a commercial contractor try a company such as Northwestern Roof Service Inc. for a starting bid and information on what your roof may need.

As with all roofing systems, what you see on the outside is far from what the complex roofing systems consists of. The roof covers approximately 75% of the exterior of a building and as such it is designed to protect the structure from water, extreme weather conditions and ultimately protect the entire building and contents from any outside elements. There are two systems that are used in the commercial market and one is a built-up type and the other is a single-ply.

A built-up system is similar to what you may imagine with the title. It is a structure that is built on top of each other with different layers and treatments involved. Insulation boards, layers of felt and other types of protective building coverings are applied with a hot bitumen or a torched-on bitumen to secure the layers. In a single-ply roofing system you have a roof that is built from a newer type of plastic materials that are welded together by another hot process and again, applied over insulation boards. As you can see, both models are different than the shingles, downspouts, insulation and even the venting systems that are found in residential roofing.

Weber Gas Grill Replacement Parts: Extend The Life Of Your Weber

Having the right knowledge about Weber gas grill replacement parts will potentially save you a lot of money if your Weber ceases to work properly. There are several key parts of a Weber that are more likely to fail than others, and these include the burners, cooking grids, rock grates, heat shields, and valves. There are also several other parts, but these are the most likely to fail.Burners. The burner is a hollow, tube-like structure at the bottom of the grill that provides the heat for cooking. Most grills only have a single burner and oftentimes the burner forms the shape of a capital H, but it can also be oval, a figure eight, or other shapes. Some grills, typically more expensive models, have multiple burners that are usually straight. They are comprised of gas inlet holes in one or more key areas and outlet ports along the length of the burner.Burners will usually fail after about one to five years of usage. The reasoning for this is that the drippings of meat are devastating to burners. Drippings contain moisture and acids that cause the burners to rust and corrode. The cooking grid (or grate), the surface where the food is actually cooked, is another part that may need replacement. Chrome-plated steal grids are the cheapest and shortest lasting of the grids. Porcelain-coated cast iron and steel grates are mid-range types of grids. Stainless steel grids are the most expensive, but they will last the longest and they typically come with a lifetime warranty.Rock grates and heat shields may also need to be replaced. Rock grates are metal cases that hold lava rocks or ceramic briquettes while heat shields are a plate or tent-like sheet of metal that covers the burner. Heat shields have several other names and are often found on most newer models of gas grills. Both rock grates and heat shields share the same purpose; they both disperse heat from the burners and protect the burners from drippings.Over time, the valves on a gas grill will rust over and begin to fail. Because valves need to be exact copies of the original, they can usually only be obtained directly from Weber. Most of the time when there is a valve failure the grill will be thrown away and replaced. There are many other parts that may need replacing during the life of a Weber gas grill. Some of the other parts that are cheap to replace include knobs, handles, gauges, and condiment trays. Almost anything can be replaced. The thing to keep in mind is that most parts can be replaced with after market parts to save a little bit of money. If you purchase after market parts, make sure they meet the specifications set forth in your owners manual.Seeking out Weber gas grill replacement parts is a great way to keep costs down while repairing your grill and extending its usable life. Having a basic understanding of the components of your Weber grill will make finding those parts easier.

Rail manslaughter charges are dropped in Hatfield, England

Thursday, July 14, 2005

Charges against the five rail bosses accused of manslaughter on four people who died in the Hatfield, England train crash, have been dropped at the Old Bailey.

Alistair Cook, 50, Sean Fugill, 50, Keith Lea, 53, and two executives from Balfour Beatty — Anthony Walker, 46, and Nicholas Jeffries, 53 — all denied the manslaughter charges. A charge of corporate manslaughter has also been dropped against the engineering firm Belfour Beatty.

But the five men and their employers, Balfour Beatty and Railtrack, still face health and safety charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Four people were killed and many more were injured when a high speed train travelling from Leeds to London derailed just outside Hatfield on 17 October 2000. An investigation after the crash found that a cracked section of rail caused the train to come off the tracks.

After five months on trial, the judge Mr Justice Mackay told the jury to find the men not guilty, saying:

“It is not open to you to convict any of the six defendants on charges of manslaughter”

He added: “I must ask you to accept my ruling, which does not affect one way or the other the important decisions you will have to make when considering verdicts on the health and safety counts.”

Mr Justice Mackay made the decision after reviewing the evidence and listening to submissions.

The collapse of yet another high-profile corporate case will more than likely put pressure for changes to current laws to make it easier to prosecute in corporate manslaughter cases. Work on new corporate manslaughter legislation has been under way for more than a decade in response to the problems encountered in bringing successful prosecutions. The latest proposals would criminalise gross management failure and the government has promised legislation before the end of next year.

Short-tailed bats to be transferred to Kapiti Island, New Zealand

Thursday, February 3, 2005

Tararua Ranges, New Zealand — In an attempt at a world first twenty short-tailed bats are to be moved by the New Zealand Department of Conservation from the Tararua Ranges to Kapiti Island. If the transfer to predator-free Kapiti works, it will become the first time that bats have ever been trans-located.

All previous attempts at moving bats have failed due to their natural homing instincts. However scientists with the Department of Conservation, are aiming to overcome this by shifting juveniles. The young bats, which weigh in at only 14 grams each, were born in the week around New Year and were raised at Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre near Eketahuna.

Conservation Minister Chris Carter said that while the trial was risky, it was also worthwhile. “A willingness to push boundaries and try new things is exactly what conservation in New Zealand needs,” he said.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/OH-WY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

No evidence of dead terrorists in US bombed Pakistan village

Monday, January 23, 2006

In an interview with CNN, Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said”There is no evidence, as of half an hour ago, that there were any other people there”. United States officials have previously stated that as many as eight al-Qaeda operatives were dining in Damadola when struck by United States missiles. As many as eighteen individuals were killed in the strike.

In the interview Prime Minister Aziz labelled a U.S. report that senior al Qaeda leaders were killed in a CIA attack as “bizarre”.

Mr Aziz said, “The area does see movement of people from across the border. But we have not found one body or one shred of evidence that these people were there.”

“If you just reflect on what happened; first, we heard that there was a dinner meeting with all the seniors,” the Prime Minister said. “I think that’s a bizarre thought, because these people don’t get together for dinner in a terrain or environment like that.”

The U.S. network ABC News reported January 18 on its Web site that the attack killed Khabab, quoting “Pakistani authorities.” However a number of Pakistani officials have told CNN they cannot confirm the ABC report.

J.D. Crouch, the USA’s Deputy National Security Advisor to President Bush told CNN on January 19, that there was no confirmation that any senior al Queda operatives were killed in the bombing.
